A proper Sydney beach day

Bondi, Manly, Bronte and beyond

The top thing to do in Sydney in summer is the obvious one: spend a day at the beach. Bondi is the famous one, Manly is an easy ferry ride from Circular Quay, and smaller beaches like Bronte, Tamarama and Clovelly are a bit quieter. Swim between the red and yellow flags, and go early to get a parking spot or a patch of sand.

Harbour beaches

Camp Cove, Balmoral and other calm-water swims

When the ocean beaches are rough, Sydney Harbour's sheltered beaches are a gentler place to swim. Camp Cove at Watsons Bay has calm water with the city skyline in the distance. Balmoral, on the Mosman side, has the netted Balmoral Baths beside its jetty. Get the ferry to Watsons Bay for fish and chips afterwards.

Making the most of a Sydney summer

  • Go early or late. Beaches and walks are at their best before 10am and after 4pm, when it's cooler and less crowded. The Bondi to Coogee walk is great at sunrise.
  • Be sun-smart. Wear a hat and sunscreen and carry water, even on cloudy days.
  • Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches, and check conditions before you go.
  • Take the ferry. Manly, Watsons Bay and Taronga are all a ferry ride from Circular Quay, and the trip is half the fun.
  • Book the big ticket items early. Westpac OpenAir, Sydney Festival shows and harbour cruises all sell out.

The season kicks off with Christmas in Sydney and New Year's Eve. For hot-day backup plans, see our indoor ideas, and for more swims, see the best beaches in Sydney.
